New telecom company subject to conditions

Main news | By Correspondent April 14, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The Office for Supervision and Standardization of Government Entities (SBTNO) has no objections to the establishment of the telecom company AquaTel. There are several conditions that the company must meet, Aqualectra director Darick Jonis explains.

The conditions drawn up by Minister of Economic Development Ruisandro Cijntje, mean that the expansion of Aqualectra may not lead to increasing fixed costs of water or electricity. In addition, setbacks in turnover must not prevent or delay the continuity of smart meters. The process of preventing leaks and reducing the associated costs must not be hindered by disappointing turnover.

With the approval of SBTNO, a major step has been taken in the arrival of a new telecom provider on the island.

Integrated Multi Utility, under which Aqualectra will come under as a separate NV, announced at the end of January that it intends to set up an Open Access Network. This means that other providers can use the Aqualectra network for a fee, which would lead to better services and lower rates for customers.

The company will offer several services that will be installed in phases. Fixed internet for individuals and companies will be available first. If everything goes according to plan, the internet is expected to be ready for use by the end of the third quarter.

Aqualectra announced last year that the company also wanted to become active in the telecom industry.
