WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao is gearing up for the introduction of paid parking in Punda and Otrobanda with the announcement that 44 new parking meters, operating on solar energy, will be installed. This development follows the signing of a management agreement between VVRP Minister Charles Cooper and the Willemstad Parking Management Foundation on March 26.
The foundation, a collaboration between the Downtown Management Organization (DMO) and the Otrobanda Merchants Society (SKO), promises to reinvest all profits from the parking project into the city center.
The agreement also emphasizes a fixed fee that the foundation will pay to the government. Furthermore, the foundation will work with Securitas BV and Flowbird SAS to have the parking management operational within five months. The rate remains the same: one guilder per hour.
Motorists in Punda and Otrobanda will soon be able to pay for their parking spot in various ways, including through the Curaçao Flowbird mobile app. This app allows parking fees to be paid with a credit or debit card.
With this system, the car with license plate registration is directly linked to the payment, without the driver having to go to the parking meter. Additionally, there is the option to pay with the pre-paid Curaçao Parking Card or with coins.
The new 'Flowbird Strada Generation 3' parking meters promise to offer an efficient and environmentally friendly solution with their large color screens and solar energy functionality. Specially trained enforcers will oversee compliance with parking regulations, equipped with special vehicles for this task.
