New senior manager must save the CMC

Main news | By Correspondent December 12, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Caryl Monte has been appointed as the new senior manager and also vice-chairman of the Regiegroep Sanering Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). This is evident from the Ministerial decision that was signed by various ministers.

His task as manager is to prepare something completely new. He brings parties together to make plans for the development of a new project. The National Decree (LB) specifies what the duties of the manager will be.

The steering group, of which the new senior manager is now vice-chairman, will consist of an executive committee that consults. The team will consist of Monte as senior manager and three 'regular' managers, who will pass on findings to Monte. The tasks that the team will perform are aimed at shaping an intervention vision, strategy and rescue plan for the CMC. In addition, according to the decision, the control group is authorized to call in external experts.

The government says that there is a joint strategy and action plan that has been made together with the CMC entities. This describes the approach to various problems. This mainly concerns the CMC Exploitation & CMC real estate and also the Hospital Nobo Otrobanda (HNO) foundation. The Taskforce Reform Market Regulation and Financing of the Healthcare Sector 2022, of which Monte is now chairman, also previously commented on the findings in connection with a document about the value of the new hospital. The document from the Taskforce-Monte shows that the hospital, in 2018, had already spent almost sixty million guilders more on 'operational costs' than the Sint Elisabeth Hospital.

According to the LB, the CMC is in dire straits and has major financial problems. These problems are already at such a stage that they may have negative consequences for the quality of care. Agreements must therefore be made urgently and action must be taken, the LB advises.
