Motion on interest for COVID loans postponed until December

Main news | By Correspondent November 7, 2023

THE HAGUE - The motion in the Dutch Senate rejecting the Dutch government's proposal to charge higher interest rates to Curaçao and Aruba for the COVID loans has been postponed.

The initiators, Eddy Hartog (Volt) and Ferd Crone (GL/PvdA), are yielding to State Secretary Marnix Van Rij (Taxation and Tax Service), who argued that one should not disturb a brooding hen. He was referring to the negotiations on financial supervision between State Secretary Alexandra van Huffelen and the Wever-Croes cabinet, which are expected to lead to a breakthrough this week.

Van Rij insisted on waiting for the outcome. The same applies to resolving the crisis over Ennia pensions, which also needs a decision within a few weeks. The State Secretary assured the motion's initiators that both the House of Representatives and the Senate will be informed about the results of the discussions.

Hartog and Crone announced today, before the voting, that they would postpone their motion until December.
