THE HAGUE – The House of Representatives will vote tomorrow on a motion of censure filed against State Secretary Alexandra van Huffelen (Kingdom Relations and Digitalization).
The petitioners accuse the minister of agreeing to the 'eID', a kind of European Digid, against the will of the House. Although more parties do not have a good word for Van Huffelen's actions, the motion will almost certainly not pass.
A few months ago, the House expressed itself in two motions against the European plan for the 'eID'. A few days before Van Huffelen went to Brussels, she sent a letter to the House that she would disregard the motions. She did that on a Friday night. Even before the House could rule on the next meeting day (Tuesday), the State Secretary had already given her yes to her EU colleagues.
“She did make films there to promote herself, but did not mention that she was doing something against the wishes of the elected parliament”, Renske Leijten (SP) said during an interpellation debate last week. Other political factions – including the ruling party ChristenUnie are angry with Van Huffelen. Pieter Omtzigt even concluded that she acted in violation of the constitution.
Van Huffelen argued that she had done her best to draw attention to the House's objections to the eID.
