Minister Hato: Haitians in Curaçao won't face deportation

Main news | By Correspondent April 10, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Justice Shalten Hato has announced that individuals from Haiti residing in Curaçao with expired residence permits will not face deportation. This decision comes amidst the precarious security situation in Haiti, prompting Curaçao authorities to refrain from repatriating them. Minister Hato emphasized that the Immigration Service will not detain individuals from Haiti lacking valid documentation; instead, they will be instructed to report to immigration authorities as needed.

The minister underscored his close monitoring of the situation in Haiti, characterized by widespread violence and a prevailing power vacuum. Given these circumstances, Curaçao has opted for a humanitarian approach, ensuring the safety and well-being of Haitian residents on the island.

Ombudsman Keursly Concincion raised concerns about this matter in a letter addressed to parliament at the end of March. Minister Hato expressed regret over the lack of direct communication with the ombudsman, highlighting his proactive engagement with the situation in Haiti since March 10. He affirmed that multiple meetings have been convened within the immigration team of the justice sector to address this issue comprehensively.

The minister's announcement reflects a humanitarian response to the plight of Haitian individuals in Curaçao and underscores the government's commitment to upholding human rights and safety amid challenging circumstances.
