WILLEMSTAD – Ruling party MFK says the sharp increase in government revenues during the first quarter of 2026 should translate into tangible improvements in the daily lives of the people of Curaçao.
In a statement issued by MFK parliamentary faction leader David Seferina, the party argued that stronger public finances should not remain merely “numbers on paper,” but must become an opportunity to strengthen communities, improve living conditions and expand economic opportunities for residents.
According to Seferina, the latest fiscal figures show encouraging signs for Curaçao’s economy at a time when many households continue struggling with rising prices and higher living costs.
Government data recently showed that Curaçao collected approximately 557 million guilders in tax revenues during the first quarter of 2026 — more than 37 million guilders above the originally projected 520 million guilders.
MFK described the result as evidence of positive economic and financial development on the island.
The higher revenues were largely driven by stronger collections from profit taxes, sales taxes and motor vehicle taxes. Curaçao also received an additional 5.5 million guilders from the Netherlands earmarked for education and projects linked to the Kingdom reform program known as the “Landspakket.”
According to Seferina, the positive financial developments should be evaluated not only from an economic perspective, but also based on their social impact on the community.
The MFK faction stated that economic growth must ultimately benefit ordinary citizens through improved living conditions, stronger support for families, more opportunities for young people and a more resilient middle class.
“Kada florin èkstra ku drenta den kaha di gobièrnu mester reflehá den mas bienestar, mas progreso i mas oportunidat pa nos komunidat,” Seferina stated, arguing that every extra guilder entering government coffers should contribute to greater welfare and progress for the population.
The party also emphasized that the additional financial space must be used responsibly and strategically by investing in sectors that directly affect the public.
MFK pointed specifically to education, neighborhood development, public cleanliness, social security and economic opportunities for youth and families as priority areas for future investments.
According to the party, improved government finances only have real value if they lead to visible progress and a better quality of life for the people of Curaçao.
