WILLEMSTAD - As crucial developments are expected this week regarding the detention of KEM leader Michelangelo ‘Lo’ Martines, the MFK party is actively exploring options to expand the current coalition. Discussions with prominent members of the coalition parties MFK, KEM, and independent parliamentarian Zita Jesus-Leito suggest that dissolving parliament early and calling for new elections is not currently a priority for them.
The future of the Pisas II Cabinet remains uncertain, partly due to the lack of clarity surrounding KEM's stance and Martines' legal situation. Although a decision was expected on Monday, November 11, attorney Eldon Sulvaran has filed a request with the court to suspend Martines' detention. A ruling on this matter was anticipated on Monday morning, but no updates were provided. KEM held a meeting on Monday evening, though no concrete new developments were announced.
The coalition partners are now waiting for a decision on either the extension or suspension of Martines' detention. A key question is whether Martines is willing to relinquish his parliamentary seat and party leadership, allowing another KEM candidate to replace him in parliament. Last week, Prime Minister Pisas made it clear that Martines would also need to step down as the political leader of KEM.
On Tuesday, another round of discussions took place within MFK, during which KEM and Jesus-Leito were briefed on the current situation. The consensus within MFK is that the uncertainty surrounding Martines cannot continue indefinitely. However, MFK is giving KEM some time to resolve the matter by appointing a replacement for Martines in parliament.
Anthony Godett, a staff member of the KEM parliamentary faction, acknowledged the need for clarity from MFK and Jesus-Leito but emphasized that KEM is also awaiting the outcome of Martines' criminal case. For KEM, it is crucial that Martines regains his freedom as soon as possible.
Coalition Expansion
The idea of expanding the coalition is a contingency plan in case Martines remains in pretrial detention for an extended period. Due to restrictions, Martines is not allowed contact with others, which could prolong the process of his resignation as a parliament member.
Other political parties have already been informed about the plans for a broader coalition. During the Central Committee meeting in parliament on Monday evening, MAN faction leader Giselle Mc William questioned the parliament chair, Charetti America-Francisca, on how she is handling the current situation, given that the Pisas Cabinet does not have full support within the coalition.
