Member of Parliament submit legal request over controversial tax forgiveness

Main news | By Correspondent December 10, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Parliamentarian Giselle Mc William (MAN-PIN) and her party colleague and former Minister Suzanne Camelia-Römer (MAN-PIN) have submitted a so-called criminal "ultimum remedium" to the Attorney General, Guillano Schoop. This legal request pertains to the controversial tax forgiveness of 3 billion guilders granted by Minister of Finance Javier Silvania (MFK). Reliable sources close to the case have confirmed the development.

Mc William herself did not explicitly confirm or deny whether the request was made to initiate a criminal investigation when asked, but she did deny her party's involvement in the legal action. When asked if she personally filed the request, she declined to comment further on the matter.

An "ultimum remedium" is considered a formal report of a criminal offense made to a competent authority, such as the police or the Public Prosecutor's Office, after all other avenues have been exhausted.

The request is related to alleged illegal activities surrounding the forgiveness, which has been widely criticized by the public and on social media. Mc William emphasized the importance of not politicizing the issue: "I don't want to turn this into a political circus," she stated. "I won’t publicize it because, in my opinion, this is something serious that is bigger than politics."

The 3-billion-guilder tax forgiveness, approved by Silvania, has sparked outrage and raised questions about the involvement of tax advisors, Ministry of Finance staff, and potentially favored businesses. The decision has raised doubts about the legality and transparency of the process.

Silvania previously defended the forgiveness, stating that it was a necessary measure to stabilize the economy, though specific details have not been provided.

It is now up to the Public Prosecutor's Office to decide how to proceed with the case. It remains unclear whether more formal reports will follow or if the Prosecutor’s Office has already initiated an investigation. Unconfirmed sources suggest that Silvania has already been questioned by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
