Melkar Prepaid Card: A year later, customers still in the dark

Main news | By Correspondent September 13, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Nearly a year has passed since Melkar Prepaid Card abruptly closed its doors, leaving customers unable to access the funds they had deposited on their prepaid cards. The fallout from this closure has sparked numerous complaints, with the Public Prosecution Office (OM) urging affected individuals to file official reports. These first reports have started to come in, leading to increased pressure on authorities to investigate the matter further.

Many customers are accusing Melkar Prepaid Card of embezzling their money, with the company’s owner, Naizir Abaidallh, at the center of the controversy. The growing number of complaints has laid the groundwork for the OM to investigate the suspected embezzlement, which could result in an arrest warrant for Abaidallh.

In August 2023, the Dutch Caribbean Police Force (RST) conducted a judicial raid on Melkar’s main office. A significant amount of administrative documentation and computers were seized for investigation. Since then, Melkar has not reopened its doors, and customers have received no further communication from the company’s representatives.

Melkar Prepaid Card had initially gained popularity by offering a convenient way for customers to deposit money into the company’s bank account, which they could then access using a swipe card. The company quickly grew its customer base, as it required minimal documentation to open an account or obtain a prepaid credit card.

However, in the aftermath of the raid, customers have been left with no answers. Shortly after the RST’s intervention, Melkar issued a brief statement through the media, urging customers to be patient and claiming that services would soon resume. At the time, the company explained that it could not take further action as it was under investigation. Despite this, many customers remained hopeful they would eventually recover their funds.

It has now been revealed that Abaidallh has left Curaçao, and authorities are currently unaware of his whereabouts. Two large companies in Curaçao have enlisted the help of a bill collector to track down Abaidallh in an attempt to recover debts owed to them. However, as of the latest reports, the bill collector has been unable to locate him.
