WILLEMSTAD - The government of Curaçao is gearing up for a political year filled with several significant challenges. Governor Lucille George-Wout stated in her speech during the opening of the parliamentary year on Tuesday that there is work to be done both on specific issues and within the ministries.
According to the governor, the Ennia insurance company's problems should receive full attention. The company, where more than 25,000 people have their pensions, has been in a poor financial situation for several years. The governor called for a solution, as otherwise, the population will suffer the consequences.
She also addressed the repayment of liquidity support. Due to the ongoing discussions with the Netherlands, it is difficult for Curaçao to get exact figures in the budget for what it will actually cost.
The same applies to the Curaçao Medical Center. The hospital is facing financial difficulties, and negotiations are ongoing, including discussions about the Landsverordening Normering Topinkomens (National Ordinance on Maximum Incomes), which sets a financial cap for doctors, making it less attractive for them to work in the hospital.
Furthermore, the government has recently begun the process of making the systems within the ministries more effective. The governor specifically mentioned the restructuring of the tax authority and the service provided by civil servants to residents.
