WILLEMSTAD - The MAN-PIN faction has raised concerns about Curaçao's financial health, despite optimistic statements from the government. According to official figures, the island experienced a deficit of 36.3 million guilders in 2023 and 25 million guilders in 2022.
The MAN-PIN party argues that the country’s financial situation is troubling, pointing out that a deficit signifies an imbalance in the finances. However, the government explains that a deficit on the capital service is permissible, and that a surplus was achieved on the ordinary service in 2023. The government further states that the deficit on the capital service is being covered with the island’s own funds. Experts, however, suggest that this may be an artificially created deficit.
Additionally, the Financial Supervision Committee (Cft) has indicated that Curaçao is financially stable. The Cft highlights that the island has sufficient resources to both invest and reduce state debt. However, the government prefers to use these resources for public investments rather than for rapidly paying down the national debt.
