WILLEMSTAD - A pressing call has been made to the government of Curaçao for the establishment of an integrity chamber, according to MAN-PIN leader Giselle Mc William. She asserts that an independent integrity chamber is essential for combating corruption and restoring trust in government institutions. This chamber would oversee ethical behavior within governance and investigate integrity issues, which are crucial for protecting Curaçao’s economy and democratic values.
An integrity chamber is an independent body that monitors the behavior, decisions, and processes within the government. According to Transparency International, Curaçao, as a small island state, faces a heightened risk of corruption, which can lead to economic instability and diminishing public trust. An organization like the integrity chamber would enhance transparency and accountability within the government and ensure that integrity issues, such as conflicts of interest, are effectively addressed.
Not a New Idea
The concept of an integrity chamber was previously included in the coalition agreement of the parties PAR, MAN, and PIN in 2017, with the ‘Unidad kontra Korupshon’ proposed as a reporting point for integrity issues. This unit would not only receive reports but also independently initiate investigations when there are suspicions of misconduct. This would help keep politics at arm's length from appointments and policies concerning government companies. Former Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath intended to establish this chamber, but it ultimately did not materialize.
MAN-PIN emphasizes the importance of progress in the legislation for the integrity chamber. In addition to the establishment of the integrity chamber, the party also advocates for strengthening existing institutions, such as the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the police, the General Audit Chamber, and the Ombudsman. This would lay the groundwork for a more transparent and trustworthy Curaçao, where the government effectively protects the interests of its citizens and tackles corruption decisively.
