Legal Action Planned Against PODS Resort Development After Successful Crowdfunding Campaign

WILLEMSTAD – The group of residents and concerned citizens opposing the current development plans surrounding the PODS Resort will continue its efforts to challenge the project. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, the group has officially hired a lawyer and, based on legal advice, plans to begin formal proceedings shortly after the summer holiday period.

Behind the scenes, preparations for the legal process are already underway. One of the first steps will be the submission of a formal objection against the recently requested hotel permit for the resort.

The initiative group is also seeking broader support from the surrounding community. Residents of Brakkeput are being approached to inform them about the developments and involve them in the next steps. In addition to the legal route, the group is exploring other constructive ways to bring the concerns of local residents to public attention.

The planned PODS Resort consists of 244 compact tourist units, which opponents compare to luxury mobile homes or modular vacation accommodations. Residents argue that the project is part of a broader trend of increasing overdevelopment on Curaçao, leading to the loss of open spaces and natural areas.

The main concerns raised by opponents focus on the potential impact on local infrastructure, particularly the already congested Caracasbaaiweg. They also question the high density of the development and the lack of what they consider an adequate rainwater drainage plan for the approximately 40-hectare area surrounding the project.

The group says it wants to ensure that the concerns of nearby residents are taken seriously and that the future development of the area takes into account environmental, infrastructural and community interests.
