Lawyer 'Peppie' Sulvaran accuses court of classism based on color and income

WILLEMSTAD - In a strongly-worded critique, attorney Mr. Eldon 'Peppie' Sulvaran has accused the judicial system in Curaçao of classism, where people are treated differently based on skin color and income. According to Sulvaran, people in Curaçao are unfairly treated during swearing-in ceremonies, which he describes as "complete abuse and falsehood."

Sulvaran emphasizes that the freedom of an individual is paramount and that the current system has dramatic consequences, especially for the black and/or poorer population groups on the island. He describes a system in which detainees appear before a judge without adequate defense, often via a video call, without their lawyer having had the opportunity to review the case file or consult with them.

The lawyer also points out a procedure in which the prosecutor is often absent during crucial decisions regarding the detention of suspects. According to him, this leads to a situation in which judges, without challenge, can detain people based on incomplete or unverified information. Sulvaran criticizes this system as a form of repression with little room for humanity and fundamental rights.

Furthermore, Sulvaran reveals the existence of a 'secret dossier' to which neither the suspect nor his lawyer have access. This dossier contains information that can be used against the suspect without the opportunity to respond. He argues that this is a violation of the right to a fair trial.

The crux of Sulvaran's criticism lies in the assertion that the judicial system in Curaçao is biased against people of color and/or people with low income. He argues that these groups are disproportionately affected by the flaws of the system, leading to a classism where the less privileged classes have less access to justice.

Sulvaran says he will further elaborate on his objections to the current system in a follow-up. He calls for a reconsideration of the practices within the judicial system, with more emphasis on humanity and the fundamental rights of all citizens, regardless of their skin color or financial situation.
