THE HAGUE – Key issues affecting Curaçao and the wider Kingdom, including social security, governance principles, and intergovernmental relations, were discussed during an introductory meeting between the Dutch Senate Committee for Kingdom Relations and State Secretary Eric van der Burg.

Topics on the agenda included the concept of “comply or explain,” the role of institutions such as Selibon, the Kingdom dispute resolution mechanism, and the ongoing tension between support and interference from the Netherlands in Caribbean affairs.

Van der Burg emphasized his commitment to the principle of four equal countries within the Kingdom, stating that relations should not be viewed as “three and one, but four.” His remarks come amid continued debate in Curaçao and other Caribbean countries about autonomy and the balance of power within the Kingdom.

While part of the discussion also focused on the BES islands, the broader implications of governance and cooperation frameworks are relevant for Curaçao, particularly regarding financial oversight, policy alignment, and institutional responsibilities.

Committee chair Paul Rosenmöller described the meeting as constructive, noting that the state secretary already demonstrated a strong understanding of Kingdom affairs shortly after taking office.

Van der Burg is scheduled to make his first official working visit to the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom from April 6 to 18, where further discussions on these issues are expected to take place.

The meeting underscores the continued importance of dialogue between The Hague and the Caribbean countries, as debates over autonomy, cooperation, and development remain central to the future of the Kingdom.
