Main News, Politics, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent June 2, 2026

THE HAGUE – Representatives from the parliaments of Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten, and the Netherlands will gather in The Hague this weekend for the latest session of the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO), with cooperation within the Kingdom taking center stage.

The semiannual meeting will officially begin on Friday with opening addresses by the leaders of the four parliamentary delegations.

This edition of the IPKO will focus on the theme “Cooperation within the IPKO and within the Kingdom,” reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between the countries that make up the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Focus on Governance and Collaboration

A key part of the discussions will take place on Saturday, when delegates will hold formal consultations on the main theme. The program includes a panel discussion led by Wouter Veenendaal, Professor of Kingdom Relations at Leiden University.

The session is expected to explore ways to improve cooperation between the Kingdom's governments and parliaments while addressing shared challenges facing the Caribbean countries and the Netherlands.

For Curaçao, the IPKO remains an important platform for raising issues related to autonomy, economic development, governance, education, climate policy, and Kingdom relations.

Visit to Community Aging Project

On Friday afternoon, the parliamentary delegations will participate in a working visit to the “Neighborhood as an Ecosystem” project in Haarlem.

The initiative focuses on addressing the challenges associated with an aging population and is designed to promote community-based solutions that help older residents remain active and connected within their neighborhoods.

The visit will allow parliamentarians to examine approaches that could potentially be adapted to the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, where demographic changes are also becoming increasingly important policy issues.

Climate Citizen Assembly Presentation

The meeting will continue on Monday, June 8, with an interactive presentation by representatives of the Dutch National Climate Citizens' Assembly.

The presentation will focus on methods of actively involving citizens in discussions and decision-making related to climate change. Organizers say the session is intended to provide parliamentarians with insights into public participation models that could be applied throughout the Kingdom.

Climate resilience remains a major concern for the Caribbean countries, which face increasing risks from rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and other environmental challenges.

Final Agreements and Joint Press Conference

The IPKO meeting will conclude Monday afternoon with the adoption and signing of a formal list of agreements reached during the consultations.

Following the signing ceremony, the chairs of the four delegations will hold a joint press conference outlining the outcomes of the meeting and the commitments made by the participating parliaments.

The opening session, Saturday's panel discussion, and the closing press conference will be livestreamed through the website of the Dutch House of Representatives, allowing the public throughout the Kingdom to follow the discussions.

The outcomes of the meeting are expected to help shape future cooperation between Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten, and the Netherlands on a range of issues affecting the Kingdom as a whole.
