THE HAGUE - GroenLinks-PvdA and D66 have called for a collaborative effort between the Dutch government and the island administrations of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba to analyze the potential benefits of exchanging the current LGO (Overseas Countries and Territories) status for UPG (Ultra-Peripheral Regions) status. This proposal, if extended upon request, could also include Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.
The motion, presented by Raoul White (GL-PvdA) on behalf of Jan Paternotte (D66) during a legislative consultation of the House of Representatives Committee for Kingdom Relations with State Secretary Van Huffelen, emphasizes that the UPG status would grant the islands significantly broader access to EU funds.
In addition, Faith Bruyning (NSC) has submitted a motion urging the government to formulate a plan for more efficient cooperation among the ministries involved with the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom. Both motions are scheduled for a vote on Tuesday.
This consultation is likely to be State Secretary Van Huffelen’s final debate in her current role. She received considerable praise from faction spokespeople for her dedication to improving the well-being of the Caribbean Netherlands and enhancing cooperation with the CAS countries (Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten).
