WILLEMSTAD - Governor Lucille George-Wout was able to give a New Year's speech for the first time on Tuesday in the presence of invited guests. This is reported by the government. The speech was given during the New Year's reception in the Palace Garden.

The governor is happy that with this we can “put the gloomy period of the Corona pandemic behind us.” George-Wout also looked back at the excuses for the slavery past from the Netherlands. This would not make up for the past, but it would provide an important basis for looking each other in the eye. She is also looking forward to the economic developments and reforms that are needed.

The governor sees the apologies and the necessary reforms in exchange for corona support as a push in the right direction. “It is precisely now that space can be created to actually work together on the future on the basis of equality.” She calls for an active attitude and taking action yourself to make a difference.

She also looks ahead to the arrival of King Willem Alexander, Queen Máxima and Princess Amalia next month. It will be Amalia's first visit to the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
