WILLEMSTAD - In an address marking the beginning of Curaçao’s parliamentary year 2024-2025, Governor Lucille George-Wout set forth a vision centered on responsibility, optimism, and national development. Acknowledging the significant challenges the island faces, she emphasized that the opportunities are just as substantial. Under the leadership of the Pisas II Cabinet, the government is resolutely focused on creating a prosperous and sustainable future for Curaçao.
Governor George-Wout laid out a comprehensive agenda, identifying three key areas that will guide the government's strategy over the coming year: Governance and Security, Economy and Sustainability, and Development and Well-being.
Governance and Security The governor highlighted the government's commitment to strengthening governance and ensuring security. Efforts will include filling critical vacancies in public services, upgrading infrastructure, and bolstering national and international relationships. Key measures include signing agreements to tackle money laundering and corruption, and enhancing cooperation within the Caribbean and with the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Economy and Sustainability To drive economic growth, the government aims to cut bureaucratic red tape, promote investment, and modernize the tax system. Additional measures include stabilizing prices and implementing the National Export Strategy. The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) will receive financial support to address ongoing challenges, while significant investments are planned for sectors such as infrastructure and tourism.
Development and Well-being The government is also prioritizing health care, with particular attention to mental health and chronic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. In education, there will be a push toward digitalization in schools and the professional development of teachers. Cultural and sports development will not be neglected, with plans to establish a National Institute of Culture and a modern national theater.
A Call for Collaboration Governor George-Wout emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration across all sectors of society. As Curaçao approaches the 70th anniversary of its autonomy, she called on citizens, businesses, and the government to work together to achieve lasting progress. The government remains committed to building a stronger and more prosperous nation for future generations.
