Government's response to Amnesty Report on Venezuelan Refugee Shelter faces delays

Main news | By Correspondent September 5, 2023

THE HAGUE - The Dutch government's anticipated response to the Amnesty International report concerning the shelter and treatment of Venezuelan refugees in Curaçao is experiencing delays. Initially, the Dutch Parliament had expected the government's response to be ready by Tuesday, but it appears that a timely release is not feasible.

In February of this year, Amnesty International issued a comprehensive report that raised concerns about the safety of Venezuelans seeking refuge in Curaçao. The report highlighted that the situation for Venezuelans in Curaçao has further deteriorated due to the perceived lack of protection provided by the local Curaçao government.

State Secretary for Kingdom Relations, Alexandra van Huffelen, confirmed that the Dutch government has yet to formulate a formal response to the Amnesty International report. It is possible that the ongoing political summer recess is contributing to the delay in addressing this pressing issue. Van Huffelen expressed her hope that the government's response will be made available to the public within the next few weeks.
