Government's mismanagement of funds once again puts our children at a disadvantage

Main news | By Correspondent September 10, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Member of Parliament for the opposition party PAR, Steven Croes says he was astonished to learn once again of cries for help coming from the realm of school sports. This time, it was through the Curaçao Sports Development Foundation (FDDK), which sent a letter on August 15 to all school directors informing them that there are no longer funds to continue with school sports for the current year.

This comes after FDDK had already issued warnings last year that funds were insufficient to continue providing this service to over three thousand children across Curaçao. Croes asks what kind of effort Minister of Education Van Heydoorn has made to try and resolve this situation in a sustainable way? It is truly unfortunate for a country with a government that claims to have its future generations and community at heart!

Meanwhile, the minister has indicated that lessons will continue. But why should the children have to suffer each time because the government fails to allocate something so important for their development in a structural way?

Croes points out that every time there are budget cuts for FDDK while money is being funneled into other projects that do not improve the well-being of thousands of young people.

More and more, it is becoming clear that this government is not taking the future of the community seriously. How can they continue in governance if this is the case?
