Government Spent Over NAf. 532 Million on New Hospital Project, Audit Finds

Local, Politics, | By Correspondent April 4, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The construction of the new hospital in Otrobanda has cost the government of Curaçao more than NAf. 532 million between 2013 and 2019, according to a report by the Algemene Rekenkamer Curaçao.

The report shows that the majority of the funds, approximately NAf. 387.7 million, were transferred to project executor SONA. An additional NAf. 64.1 million was provided as advances to HNO-related entities, while NAf. 80.8 million was spent on other project-related costs.

However, nearly half of these expenditures—around NAf. 267.4 million—were not initially included in the approved budgets. The government later used budget amendments to cover most of these costs, but a remaining NAf. 29.8 million was spent without any formal budget allocation.

The findings raise concerns about financial planning and transparency in one of the largest public infrastructure projects in Curaçao’s history.
