Government retains majority in parliament with support from Independent MP

Main news | By Correspondent November 18, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao government has maintained its majority in Parliament, thanks to the support of independent MP Corine Djaoen-Genaro. On Friday, Djaoen-Genaro submitted a formal statement to the Governor, effectively dismissing the possibility of early elections. Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas is also reported to have received the statement.

The coalition's stability was in question following the arrest of KEM party leader Michelangelo ‘Lo’ Martines. His detention has prevented him from fulfilling his parliamentary duties, putting the majority at risk. It remains uncertain whether Anthony Godett, the second candidate on KEM's list, will take Martines' place in Parliament.

Public Opinion Against Early Elections

Djaoen-Genaro stated that she conducted a survey among several hundred residents. The findings indicated that most citizens do not favor early elections. “Nobody wants elections between the Tumba Festival and Carnival,” the MP remarked. Djaoen-Genaro clarified that she has made no demands in exchange for her support and is not seeking a ministerial position.

With her backing, the current coalition between the MFK party and Zita Jesus-Leito remains intact for now.

Prime Minister Pisas has been approached for comment, but no response was available at the time of publication.
