WILLEMSTAD - The various organizations that form the "Crisis Management and Disaster Response Organization" (CRBo) have informed Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas about their preparations for the hurricane season. This occurred on the first day of the 2023 hurricane season, June 1, 2023. The official season runs until the end of November. The CRBo in Curaçao is the disaster response team responsible for managing and mitigating risks in crisis or disaster situations.

The CRBo is divided into 10 Emergency Support Functions (ESFs) and their representatives include the Police, Fire Department, Ambulance Services, UTS (telecommunications company), BT&P (telecommunications company), WJZ (water and electricity company), Aqualectra (water and electricity company), Public Works Service, Ministry of SOAW, Directorate of Communication and Information, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Economic Development, Coast Guard, Meteorological Department, Ministry of GMN, Red Cross, CITRO (telecommunications company), and volunteer assistants.
During the meeting, the organizations discussed their disaster preparedness plans for the hurricane season. Each representative provided an overview of their preparations for the upcoming season. For example, the Fire Department equipped their stations with additional equipment that may be necessary during inclement weather. The Police and Ambulance Services are also prepared for any eventualities during the hurricane season. The Public Works Service conducted inspections of various spaces that could potentially serve as shelters when needed.
The disaster team is active throughout the year to prepare for any disaster. This is done under the coordination of the Risk Control and Disaster Management Directorate. Together, the disaster team helps to mitigate the consequences that a crisis or disaster can have in Curaçao. Recently, in the month of April, the first edition of the "Preparedness Week" was organized, where different organizations informed and demonstrated to the people of Curaçao about the tasks they carry out during a crisis or disaster situation. It is important for everyone, individually, within their families, and at work, to remember the necessary preparations. Preparation is the most important part of being able to recover better and faster from any crisis.
As a reminder of what everyone can do, here is the following checklist:
Ensure you have a disaster plan at home in case of a hurricane threat.
Check emergency equipment and battery-powered devices such as radios, flashlights, and cell phones. Make sure to have extra batteries.
Ensure you have non-perishable food and sufficient drinking water (3 liters per person per day) for a minimum of 3 days.
Trim trees and bushes around your home that may cause damage during strong winds, both at your own house and neighboring houses.
