Former Central Bank President Emsley Tromp Again Convicted on Appeal, Receives Suspended Sentence

| By Correspondent February 27, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Former president of the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten, Emsley Tromp, has once again been convicted on appeal and sentenced to a fully suspended prison term of six months. The ruling was handed down on Wednesday in a case involving forgery and complicity.

The sentence relates to Tromp’s role as an accomplice in the falsification of documents in a case that also involved a former colleague from the Central Bank. According to the court, influence was used to secure financing of 400,000 US dollars for the purchase of a property. Part of that amount was allegedly transferred to personal bank accounts.

Tromp had previously been convicted in an earlier case for fraudulent actions. In the current proceedings, the focus was specifically on his role as an accomplice rather than as a principal offender.

In January, the Openbaar Ministerie again demanded a fully suspended prison sentence of six months in the appeal case. The court followed that request in its ruling.

The imposed sentence means that Tromp will not have to serve time in prison, unless he commits another criminal offense during the probation period. The verdict brings the appeal proceedings in this case to a close, reaffirming the earlier findings of misconduct linked to document forgery and improper financial dealings.
