Education Union Calls for Urgent Action on School Safety in Curaçao

Main News, Politics, | By Correspondent April 14, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Sitek is calling for immediate measures to improve safety at schools across Curaçao, warning that violence and threats have persisted for years without adequate government response.

According to Sitek president Darius ‘Lio’ Plantijn, incidents involving aggression, intimidation, and insecurity continue to affect both students and staff, creating an environment marked by fear and trauma.

The union says the lack of necessary legislation has contributed to the ongoing situation and is urging authorities to take decisive action.

As part of its proposals, Sitek is advocating for the introduction of a 500-meter safety zone around schools, stricter penalties for violations, and increased police presence in and around educational institutions.

The union plans to bring the issue back to Parliament, calling on political leaders to intervene and implement measures aimed at restoring a safe learning environment.

Sitek emphasized that without immediate action, the safety and well-being of both students and educators will remain at risk.
