THE HAGUE - Dutch Members of Parliament Faith Bruyning and Daniëlle Jansen, both representing the Nieuw Sociaal Contract (NSC) party, have raised concerns over the deepening financial crisis at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). The MPs have submitted formal questions to State Secretaries Karremans (Health, Welfare, and Sport) and Szabó (Digitalization and Kingdom Relations), seeking clarity on the Dutch government's role in addressing the ongoing crisis and the types of financial support being considered.
The MPs were prompted to act after reading an alarming article in Financieele Dagblad titled "Curaçao's Healthcare on the Brink: A Bill for the Netherlands is Unavoidable." According to the report, the CMC has faced escalating financial deficits since its opening in 2019. The crisis has sparked disputes between the hospital and the Curaçaoan government, even leading to legal battles. The situation has worsened since Curaçao's Finance Minister Javier Silvania took on responsibility for healthcare, straining relations between the hospital's management and the government.
Bruyning and Jansen are pressing the Dutch government to explain what steps are being taken to address the crisis, both in terms of immediate financial relief and potential long-term solutions. They are also seeking insight into the feasibility of ongoing support for Curaçao’s healthcare system to prevent further collapse.
The situation remains critical as the CMC continues to operate under mounting financial pressure, and the MPs' intervention highlights the urgency of finding a resolution to ensure the sustainability of healthcare in Curaçao.
