THE HAGUE - On Tuesday, the Dutch House of Representatives expressed support for various motions about the consequences of climate change in the Caribbean. The House wants more attention for support and solidarity within the Kingdom.
Two weeks ago, several MPs referred to a Greenpeace warning about Bonaire during a debate on the budget for Kingdom Relations. The nature organization stated that the island will partly disappear under water due to climate change.
Sylvana Simons urged a study on the consequences of climate change on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba and for support for Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten. The MP submitted the motions on behalf of the parties D66, GroenLinks, the PvdD, Volt and De Haan faction and received support from a parliamentary majority on Tuesday.
In addition, there was also support for a proposal by D66 and the CristenUnie to draw up a so-called Delta Plan for climate policy for the BES islands. The ChristenUnie drew attention to solidarity within the Kingdom.
