WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçaoan government is examining the feasibility of establishing a national bank, potentially incorporating Giro Settlement Holding into its plans. This initiative also considers the presence of existing banks with a social role, such as Korpodeko and the Development Bank of the Netherlands Antilles (Ontwikkelingsbank van de Nederlandse Antillen), according to Extra newspaper.
During a parliamentary session yesterday, the MFK faction raised questions about creating a national bank. The government described the idea as "desirable and understandable" but stressed the importance of studying its potential impact. Key considerations include the economic implications for Curaçao and how a national bank would compete with existing commercial banks.
To address financial accessibility issues, the government is also working on a legislative proposal to establish an entity that provides payment services. This entity would cater to individuals and businesses that face challenges in opening or maintaining a bank account.
The government’s plan aims to balance the benefits of a national bank with the broader economic landscape and ensure financial inclusivity for all Curaçaoans.
