Curaçao Tourism Sector Pushes for Sustainable Growth Over Mass Tourism

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s tourism sector is calling for a stronger focus on sustainable and manageable tourism growth as concerns rise over infrastructure pressure, climate resilience, housing shortages and preserving the island’s identity.

The issue took center stage during the latest meeting of the Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association (CHATA), where more than 130 representatives from the hotel industry, restaurants, government and tourism organizations gathered to discuss the future direction of the island’s tourism development.

According to CHATA, future growth should not be measured solely by increasing visitor numbers, but by achieving better quality, balance and long-term planning.

CHATA director Anuschka Cova warned that Curaçao must avoid allowing economic growth to come at the expense of local culture, the living environment and the wider community.

She stressed that tourism policy should remain focused on balanced development and protecting the island’s character.

During the meeting, speakers emphasized that sustainability must become more than just a marketing slogan. Participants warned that Curaçao should learn from other Caribbean destinations where uncontrolled mass tourism has placed growing pressure on infrastructure, nature and overall quality of life.

According to CHATA, Curaçao is currently at an important stage where the island still has the opportunity to shape tourism development proactively before larger structural problems emerge.

The discussions also highlighted challenges linked to labor shortages, pressure on the housing market and the increasing importance of climate adaptation as the tourism sector continues to expand.

Tourism remains one of the main pillars of Curaçao’s economy, with the island experiencing strong visitor growth in recent years. However, industry leaders say maintaining a balance between economic benefits and sustainability will become increasingly important for the long-term future of the sector.
