Curaçao opens new police recruitment drive as officer shortage continues

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s Ministry of Justice has launched a new recruitment campaign aimed at attracting young people to join the police force, as the island continues to face a shortage of officers.

Justice Minister Shalten Hato announced the new application round for aspiring police officers, giving interested candidates a 100-day window to apply.

The registration period runs from April 23 through July 31, 2026, and applications must be submitted online through the ministry’s recruitment platform, Trabou den Hustisia.

According to the ministry, candidates who meet the requirements will be invited to participate in the official police selection process.

The recruitment effort comes as the Korps Politie Curaçao (KPC) continues to struggle with staffing shortages, an issue that has affected law enforcement capacity on the island for years.

Authorities hope the new recruitment round will help strengthen police presence and improve operational capacity.

Young people aged 17 and older are eligible to apply, provided they have completed at least a VSBO-TKL diploma or hold an SBO or MBO diploma at level 2.

As part of the application process, candidates must upload a curriculum vitae, a motivation letter and copies of their diplomas through the online system.

All required documents must be submitted in PDF format.

The Ministry of Justice says more information about the next stages of the recruitment and training process will be announced in the coming weeks.

Police recruitment has become a priority for the government amid increasing demands on law enforcement, including crime prevention, public safety and border security.

The ministry says the new application round offers young people an opportunity to build a career in public service while contributing to the safety and security of Curaçao.
