WILLEMSTAD – The Government of Curaçao has started preparations for a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy aimed at ensuring that emerging technologies are used responsibly and contribute to the sustainable development of the island.

As part of the development process, the government will soon begin a broad consultation round with representatives from education, science, the business sector, social organizations and government institutions.

The objective is to create a strategy that reflects the needs and realities of Curaçao while identifying how artificial intelligence can contribute to a stronger, more innovative and more inclusive society.

Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Sithree van Heydoorn called on individuals and organizations involved in technology and innovation to actively participate in the consultation process.

According to the minister, the strategy should not be developed behind closed doors but through contributions from the wider community.

“The National AI Strategy will not be created from one office alone. It requires input from society to determine how AI can help build a stronger, more innovative and inclusive Curaçao,” Van Heydoorn said.

The government has appointed the Regulatory Authority of Curaçao (RAC) as coordinator of the National AI Strategy. RAC will oversee the national consultation process, facilitate cooperation between different sectors and ensure that contributions received are incorporated into the strategy’s development.

The strategy will build on findings from the UNESCO AI Readiness Assessment and take into account international frameworks such as the UNESCO Caribbean AI Policy Roadmap.

However, the government emphasized that Curaçao will develop its own approach, adapted to the island’s specific circumstances and priorities.

The consultation process is expected to provide the foundation for a long-term AI policy that prepares Curaçao for technological changes while ensuring that innovation takes place in a responsible manner.
