Curaçao and the Netherlands collaborate on increasing sustainable energy

Main news | By Correspondent May 17, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao and the Netherlands have joined forces during a meeting at Fort Nassau to implement more sustainable energy projects in Curaçao.

Minister Rob Jetten for Climate and Energy and Minister Ruisandro Cijntje of Economic Development have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

This agreement fosters close collaboration in the areas of solar energy, wind energy, energy storage, and green hydrogen. This presents opportunities for a more sustainable future, economic development, and affordable energy in Curaçao.

Due to its constant wind and abundant sunshine, Curaçao holds significant potential for sustainable energy generation. The island has the ambition to take a leading role in the field of sustainable energy. The Netherlands acknowledges this and provides support in terms of expertise, knowledge, and experience to harness this potential.

In 2021, the Living Lab was established, a collaborative program where governments, Curaçaoan and Dutch companies, and knowledge partners such as TNO and UoC work on concrete projects. The aim is to bring relevant parties together and establish and organize sustainable production, storage, consumption, and infrastructure chains.

With the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, the collaboration takes another step forward. The countries agree to work closely together on the development of solar energy, wind energy, bio-energy, energy storage, and green hydrogen.

The agreement includes provisions for the exchange of personnel, scientific and technological knowledge, as well as the organization of joint working groups, policy dialogues, and research projects.

This provides a new boost to the Curaçaoan economy, contributes to a more sustainable and affordable energy supply in Curaçao, and creates export opportunities for the Netherlands and the Kingdom.
