CMC urges withdrawal of directives as tensions with Inspectorate continue

Main news | By Correspondent July 3, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - In a growing standoff, the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has set a deadline for the Inspectorate for Public Health to retract its directives. The hospital's management claims that Inspector-General Sirving Keli is exceeding his authority, and they express a lack of understanding regarding the urgency. However, despite the CMC's plea, it was revealed this morning that Keli remains unmoved. Consequently, the directives aimed at addressing the waiting lists and the shortage of medical specialists at the CMC will remain in effect. The hospital administration has not ruled out the possibility of pursuing legal action.

The CMC, one of the prominent healthcare institutions on the island, has been locked in a dispute with the Inspectorate for Public Health over the imposed directives. These directives instruct the hospital to tackle the extensive waiting lists and find solutions to mitigate the shortage of medical specialists. While the Inspectorate sees these measures as necessary to ensure proper healthcare provision, the CMC vehemently opposes them.

According to the CMC's management, Inspector-General Sirving Keli has overstepped his authority by issuing these directives. They argue that such matters should be handled through collaborative discussions and decision-making processes involving all relevant stakeholders. The hospital questions the Inspectorate's grasp of the urgency and emphasizes the potential adverse effects of diverting patients to other facilities without the necessary resources and expertise.

In an attempt to resolve the issue, the CMC made a formal plea to the Inspectorate, urging the withdrawal of the directives. However, this plea proved unsuccessful as Keli remains resolute in maintaining the directives. The hospital's management expressed disappointment and concern over the decision, as it believes that the measures are not feasible and may have detrimental consequences for patient care.

As tensions escalate, the CMC has not ruled out seeking legal recourse to challenge the directives. This step would further escalate the conflict between the hospital and the Inspectorate, potentially leading to a protracted legal battle.

The CMC, as a vital healthcare institution serving the community, recognizes the importance of resolving the underlying issues promptly. It remains committed to providing quality healthcare services to its patients while also addressing the concerns raised by the Inspectorate. However, the disagreement over the directives continues to cast a shadow of uncertainty over the future of healthcare provision at the CMC.
