Clear vision for Willemstad’s inner city launched

WILLEMSTAD - A long-awaited initiative to bring organization, collaboration, and a future vision to Willemstad’s historic inner city has been unveiled. The cornerstone of this ambitious plan, led by the Ministries of Traffic, Transportation, and Urban Planning (VVRP) and Economic Development (MEO), is the newly appointed “Quartermaster,” Hans van Aalst.

The announcement was made during the sixth annual Invest in Willemstad conference, held in the Central Bank auditorium in Scharloo, with over 100 attendees.

Comprehensive Plan for Willemstad’s Four Districts

The Ministries of MEO and VVRP have signed an agreement to collaborate on an integrated vision for Willemstad’s inner city, encompassing the districts of Punda, Pietermaai, Scharloo, and Otrobanda. A working group, known as the Werkgroep Ontwikkeling Binnenstad (WOB), will spearhead the project. It will feature representatives from both ministries, the private sector, and civil society organizations, working under a unified chairperson.

Hans van Aalst, a seasoned urban manager who has served in cities like Gouda and now resides on Curaçao, has laid the groundwork by interviewing 65 public and private stakeholders. These discussions informed a detailed terms of reference document, which will serve as a blueprint for the revitalization plan.

A Community United in Optimism

Excitement was palpable during Wednesday’s announcement, as stakeholders reflected on longstanding challenges that have hindered Willemstad’s potential. Issues such as unclear accountability for street maintenance, the lack of public restrooms, and persistent vacancy in residential and commercial properties have plagued the city for years.

Questions like, “Who is responsible for fixing a crooked sidewalk tile?” and “How can we create a vibrant inner city with a distinctive identity within five years?” have remained unanswered due to fragmented responsibilities.

With the establishment of the WOB and Van Aalst’s leadership, these problems are expected to be resolved. The vision document is scheduled for completion by early March, with actionable plans set to follow.

A Brighter Future for Willemstad

The initiative represents a turning point for Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and aims to restore its status as a bustling, cohesive, and welcoming hub. By aligning public and private efforts, the project promises to deliver long-term improvements, ensuring the city’s charm and economic vitality endure for future generations.
