THE HAGUE - Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten have recently announced their intention to prioritize the introduction of two international treaties aimed at preventing violence against women and children, according to a statement made during the Official Legislative Consultation on Kingdom Relations.
State Secretary Alexandra Van Huffelen, responsible for Kingdom Relations, conveyed this information in response to questions raised by the Senate regarding the non-ratification of human rights treaties, particularly by the CAS countries. It was noted that these countries lack the necessary knowledge and implementation capacity. Consequently, the Netherlands has decided to provide assistance to these countries. However, there has been a miscommunication within the government: in addition to the process being carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations has pursued its own approach.
Upon being confronted with this issue by Minister Hoekstra (BZ), Van Huffelen agreed to explore how the two initiatives could be merged.
