Call for a more inclusive labor market in Curaçao

Main news | By Correspondent May 9, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - A recent round table discussion, initiated by Human Rights Defense Curaçao (HRDC), has shed light on the importance of fostering a more inclusive labor market in Curaçao. This significant gathering resulted in the formulation of a policy proposal that highlights the need for enhanced cooperation, a comprehensive analysis of employment supply and demand, and a study exploring potential tax contributions from migrants.

The February meeting, which centered around the theme of creating a more inclusive labor market, yielded promising outcomes. HRDC expects that these outcomes will translate into concrete plans for employers and employees, facilitating a more efficient approach to job search and recruitment processes.

The round table discussion garnered substantial participation, with attendance from various ministries, members of parliament, and trade unions. The consensus reached during the meeting emphasized the necessity of cultivating a labor market that embraces inclusivity. Beyond the focus on employment opportunities, the gathering delved into the quality and structure of work itself. Participants advocated for initiatives aimed at upskilling the workforce and ensuring the provision of decent and meaningful employment opportunities for all.

Recognizing the multifaceted nature of the issue, the policy proposal addresses key aspects crucial to achieving an inclusive labor market in Curaçao. By fostering collaboration among stakeholders, conducting a thorough assessment of employment dynamics, and exploring the potential economic contributions of migrants through taxation, the proposed plan aims to bring about positive change.

The HRDC remains optimistic that this policy proposal will serve as a catalyst for constructive dialogue between employers, employees, and relevant authorities. By actively addressing the challenges and opportunities in the labor market, Curaçao can pave the way towards a more inclusive and equitable society, where everyone has access to meaningful employment and is empowered to contribute to the island's prosperity.
