Main news | By Correspondent December 28, 2023

THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - State Secretary for Kingdom Relations, Alexandra van Huffelen, has indicated that social security, education, and poverty are the focal points for the islands within the Kingdom in the coming months. She conveyed this during the last online press conference of the year, held recently.

Critical issues for the upcoming year include evaluating the proposed solution on the table for Ennia and reaching a compromise with the government of Aruba within the framework of the Kingdom Act on Financial Supervision. Additionally, there is a possibility of a meeting between the BES islands and the Dutch government, potentially in Curaçao, regarding two laws that are in the early stages concerning the financial relationship between the islands and The Hague.

Van Huffelen also expressed satisfaction with the achievements of 2023, emphasizing the focus on poverty alleviation on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. Educational reforms have been implemented in Curaçao, leading to significant improvements. Sint Maarten has prioritized sustainability, and Aruba has concentrated on enhancing the functionality of its government apparatus.
