WILLEMSTAD - Global Oil's plans to commence asphalt production for the Curaçao market have faced a setback, as the company announces a delay in starting operations until September. Patrick Newton, the director of Refineria di Korsou (RdK), revealed this development. Initially slated to kick off in May as per the original schedule, the commencement of operations is now rescheduled to September.
The decision to postpone the start date comes after careful consideration of operational factors. Newton explained that the original plan entailed beginning operations at the refinery site by the end of May 2024, followed by eighteen months of thorough inspections and essential repairs to the installations. However, a strategic decision has been made to conduct the so-called 'turnaround' in the coming months. This comprehensive maintenance approach aims to ensure a safe start-up and, importantly, guarantee uninterrupted asphalt production for the next four years.
Earlier in 2024, Global Oil's CEO, Harry Sargeant, visited Curaçao, reiterating the company's commitment to its plans for the island. Nearly a year ago, Sargeant, alongside Patrick Newton, signed an agreement on Curaçao pertaining to asphalt production. Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas was also present during the signing, signaling the significance of the project for the island's economic development.
