WILLEMSTAD - On Thursday, June 8th, around 1:25 PM, Curaçao experienced a blackout. This occurred after a major cable, which plays a crucial role in electricity distribution at the Parera substation, suffered significant damage.
This damage caused the Parera substation to go offline, resulting in a complete imbalance in the local electricity production and distribution system. After several hours of intensive work and various challenges to restart production in a stable manner, Aqualectra managed to restore the power situation for the entire island at around 1:20 AM. Soon, they will announce the streamlined procedure for individuals who wish to submit an official claim, for example, for damaged electronic devices. Aqualectra takes this opportunity to apologize once again for the inconvenience caused by the situation.
During the past weeks, certain areas in Curaçao experienced temporary power outages due to insufficient capacity. It is important to emphasize that this temporary capacity shortage was not the cause of the blackout. In the meantime, Aqualectra has taken necessary measures to ensure sufficient production capacity to meet the community's demand. A thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the exact cause of the cable's damage. The community will be duly informed of the investigation's results and the specific steps taken to prevent a recurrence in the near future.
Another notable occurrence following the blackout was the vandalism of some Aqualectra properties during the blackout. As a result, there are still certain areas without power. A plea is made to everyone in the areas still without power to report this.
