Upgrade of Hato E-Gates may cause passenger flow delays

The new e-gates at Hato are intended to reduce wait times.

WILLEMSTAD - Significant upgrades are underway on a portion of the older E-gates at Curaçao International Airport Hato to meet international requirements. Due to these works, some E-gates, both on arrival and departure, may temporarily be out of service, potentially resulting in longer wait times at immigration. This information was provided by the airport's operator, Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP).

Upon arrival at Hato, immigration currently has six Visionbox GT10 model E-gates, later supplemented with four GT11 models. The older models, in use since 2016, are now being replaced to ensure the continued smooth flow of passengers.

The new E-gates are expected to be operational on March 25. During the installation and testing phase, a portion of E-gates on arrival will be temporarily out of service. Additionally, the two older E-gates on departure will be upgraded, while the other two are already of the new model.

Integration

The upgraded system will also be integrated with the new Immigration electronic boarding/alighting system and will interface with Curaçao Airport Partners' AODB flight list and the border management system of the Curaçao police.

This will enable enhanced real-time background checks of passengers, including Advance Passenger Information upon arrival, contributing to airport security.

In 2023, over 1.7 million passengers used Curaçao International Airport, a more than sixteen percent increase compared to the previous year. With nineteen different airlines offering flights to twenty-three destinations, the Caribbean airport is experiencing exponential growth in both leisure and business passengers. Plans are in place to expand capacity from 1.7 to 2.5 million passengers per year in the near future.
