Rhuggenaath will not take his seat in parliament

WILLEMSTAD - Outgoing Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath will not be sworn in as a member of Parliament today. In a press release, his party PAR announces that Rhuggenaath will not claim his seat.

As a result, all candidates on the PAR list move up one place and Steven Croes, current outgoing Minister of Education, will most likely replace Rhuggenaath in parliament.

In the statement, PAR writes that rejuvenation of the party was one of Rhuggenaath's spearheads. “The party administration must continue the party's transformation and rejuvenation process to form future leaders for the next elections in 2025,” Rhuggenaath said presenting the current list.

"Based on the latest election results and evaluation, Rhuggenaath says he feels called upon to take responsibility in the rejuvenation process," said the press release.

Rhuggenaath will lead and support the PAR faction in parliament, with the party saying it wants to conduct a constructive opposition during these difficult times. How Rhuggenaath will assist the party remains unclear.

Earlier, the party unsuccessfully asked current outgoing minister Zita Jesus-Leito to renounce her seat of Parliament and make way for a younger generation of politicians.
