WILLEMSTAD - Prime Minister Gilmar “Pik” Pisas explained on Wednesday why the government decided on Monday evening to close all schools on Tuesday as a precaution against expected bad weather.
Pisas said the measure was taken to prevent flooding-related problems, reduce traffic risks, and ensure the safety of children. In the end, Tuesday’s weather remained calm, but the Prime Minister emphasized that it is better to act cautiously than to regret inaction afterward.

“This situation once again shows that weather patterns are unpredictable,” Pisas said, stressing that timely decision-making is crucial when dark clouds and unfavorable weather conditions are observed over Curaçao.
According to the Prime Minister, closing schools early allows emergency services and disaster response teams to better prepare and operate safely. He pointed out that keeping schools open during sudden heavy rainfall could create evacuation challenges for hundreds of students.
“It’s not about overreacting—it’s about being prepared,” Pisas explained. “In such cases, taking preventive measures is the responsible thing to do.”
The Prime Minister concluded by asking the public for understanding, noting that the safety of the island’s children must always come first and that preparedness remains the best defense against unexpected natural events.
