WILLEMSTAD - Responding to recent claims about the human rights situation of Venezuelan refugees in Curaçao, Minister of Justice Shalten Hato emphasized the importance of upholding human rights within the legal framework of the island. His response comes after the Dutch radio program Pointer raised concerns about the condition of Venezuelan refugees' rights on April 20. 

Minister Hato addressed the assertions made by Pointer, stating that while there are challenges, the claims presented were 'incomplete'. He underscored the significance of human rights, labeling them as 'essential' components of the island's legal system. Hato asserted that local legislation and international standards are adhered to when it comes to detaining undocumented migrants. 

"In our pursuit of law enforcement, it is imperative to maintain a delicate balance while also respecting the rights and dignity of migrants," Minister Hato stated. He further highlighted the unique context of Curaçao as a Small Island Development State, noting its limited size, population, and resources. "Our vulnerability to external shocks and reliance on international trade necessitate careful consideration in our policies," he added. 

Acknowledging the capacity constraints faced by the island, Minister Hato stressed the need for pragmatic solutions. "We recognize the challenges posed by our small size and limited resources. While striving for effective law enforcement, we must also ensure that our actions uphold the principles of human rights," he remarked.
