Leasehold Issued for Tourism Development in Western Zakitó

WILLEMSTAD – The area west of the Zakitó Lagoon is set to be developed. The Ministry of Traffic, Transport, and Urban Planning (VVRP) announced via an advertisement that a total of 78,050 square meters of land will be issued on a leasehold basis. The area is designated as a "tourism zone" in the Island Development Plan (EOP).

The land, equivalent to about 11 football fields, is located between the Zakitó Lagoon, Parasassa Beach, the World Trade Center, and the Royal Palm Resort.

The ministry stated, “The area to be developed has its own unique character, and development opportunities must ensure harmony with the surrounding environment and existing structures.” Developers have a two-week registration window, from January 3 to January 17, to submit proposals to the Land Management Office.

Criticism of Previous Plans

The development of this area has drawn significant attention and concern. To the north of the Zakitó Lagoon, several residential towers are under construction, which have faced heavy criticism. Local residents argue that the towers disrupt the area’s natural views, ecology, and character. They also fear losing access to recreational spaces around the lagoon, which are popular for walking and sports.

Additionally, plans for a marina in the lagoon have raised environmental concerns. Critics worry that the construction could upset the ecological balance of the mangrove-rich area.
