WILLEMSTAD - Governor Lucille George-Wout has warned the faction leaders in parliament against intervention by the Kingdom Council of Ministers in The Hague.
The five opposition parties (together accounting for 10 of the 21 seats) are trying to prevent candidate parliamentarian Elhage from coalition party PAR from being sworn in, which would mean that the coalition of PAR and MAN would again have a (narrow) majority in Parliament meetings. The opposition wants new elections and has therefore twice failed to show up at a public meeting of parliament where Elhage's credentials would be discussed.
George-Wout called the faction leaders on Tuesday. She is considering the Kingdom Council of Ministers to request a General Measure from the Government of the Netherlands so that she can still swear in Elhage (as successor to William Millerson, who died in June). The opposition representatives have announced that they will not change their position after the conversation with the governor. President of Parliament Pauletta has scheduled a new meeting for Friday.
There is unrest on the political front in Curaçao. For example, the Rhuggenaath Cabinet already lost 2 ministers, one is being prosecuted by the Public Prosecution Service.
Aruba is also rumbling. There Minister Bikker refuses to participate in the Council of Ministers as long as his party member Minister Lopez-Tromp is part of the government. Thanks to the intervention of Prime Minister Wever-Croes, she now continues as a minister without a portfolio. Friday there will be a scheduled public meeting of parliament with the only agenda item being to withdraw support for Minister Lopez-Tromp.
