Electricity Situation in Curaçao Under Control Despite Rising Demand, Says Aqualectra

WILLEMSTAD – Utility company Aqualectra has assured the public that Curaçao’s electricity situation remains under control, despite increased demand and higher-than-normal temperatures observed in recent days. The company is giving special attention to the island’s energy supply as part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the grid.

The Meteorological Service reports that weather conditions—including intense heat and low wind—are expected to persist through the week. Combined with Curaçao’s continued economic growth, these factors are contributing to rising electricity consumption, particularly during the evening hours when most residents are at home.

In response, Aqualectra technicians are working tirelessly to maintain supply levels and minimize service interruptions. However, the company warns that temporary reductions in power supply may still be necessary in some areas to balance the grid.

To manage this, Aqualectra may implement scheduled power shifting (“schakel”) between neighborhoods. If this becomes necessary, each affected area may experience outages lasting approximately two hours, the company said.

Infrastructure Investment Underway

Aqualectra is also accelerating efforts to strengthen the island’s energy infrastructure. Among the key projects underway:

A new battery storage system is expected to go online by July 2025, which will help stabilize fluctuations in renewable energy production.

Construction of the SALU Power Plant is set to begin soon. The new facility will expand energy capacity and boost resilience in the face of growing demand and climate challenges.

“These investments are part of our long-term strategy to deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy to the people of Curaçao,” Aqualectra stated.

Call for Public Cooperation

The company is also calling on residents to contribute by using electricity more consciously, especially during peak evening hours. Recommendations include:

Turning off unnecessary lights

Unplugging unused appliances

Avoiding overuse of high-energy devices

Aqualectra will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates through its social media channels.

For now, the message is clear: the system is under control, but collaboration between the utility provider and the public is essential to keeping Curaçao connected and resilient.
