Dutch ruling party wants seizure of Russian superyachts in Sint Maarten

THE HAGUE - The Members of Parliament for the coalition partner VVD, Roelien Kamminga and Ruben Brekelmans want to know from the Minister of Foreign Affairs Wopke Hoekstra and the State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Alexandra Van Huffelen whether there are superyachts owned by Russians in Sint Maarten and, if so, whether the ministers are prepared to inform the government of Sint Maarten to seize these.

Both MPs asked questions to the government.

The MPs asked if the government is familiar with the news article 'Superyachts of wealthy Russians seized by France and Germany. Is it true that there are also yachts of one or more Russian oligarchs in the waters of Sint Maarten?

Do you agree that this is undesirable in view of the current situation in Ukraine and the sanctions imposed against Russia and that it should be considered whether they can be seized? If not, can you explain why not?

Have you already contacted the government of Sint Maarten regarding this matter?

In line with the above, have you already spoken to the French authorities, who have already seized yachts belonging to Russian oligarchs that were in their waters?

Can you explain why a number of countries, including France and Germany, have already taken action and Sint Maarten has not yet?

Do you agree that we must do everything within the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands to implement the sanctions imposed and to maximize the pressure on Russia? If so, how does the cabinet act in collaboration with the Caribbean part of the Kingdom?

Are you prepared to provide parliament with further information on this matter in the short term?
