Curaçao wants more help with care of Venezuelan refugees

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao government has submitted a second request for support to the Dutch government in connection with the impact that migration from Venezuela has on the Curaçao community.

The Netherlands should, among other things, help with the search at sea. The Dutch government has also been asked to help improve the approach to the illegal residence of Venezuelans and there must be more places to secure illegal immigrants. Finally, Curaçao wants to work with the Netherlands to prevent health risks.

These are Venezuelans who have not returned after the maximum period of residence as a tourist or after the expiry of a temporary residence permit. In addition, many Venezuelans come to Curaçao in boats illegally.

Increase in human and arms trade

According to the government of Curaçao, the island is experiencing more and more negative consequences of the crisis in the South American country. Increase in human trafficking, smuggling of human beings, drug smuggling and the arms trade are major problems.

Based on a first support request last year, the Netherlands already contributed financially by 132,000 euros to the improvement of the detention capacity for undocumented migrants. The Curaçao government wants to consult with the Netherlands about providing more support. According to the local government, there are 4,000 to 6,000 Venezuelans in Curaçao, with a population of 150,000. Aruba and Bonaire also must deal with Venezuelan refugees.
